Former Residence of Saint Joseph Freinademetz, SVD

The original site of the chapel, where Father Joseph Freinademetz lived in Yim Tin Tsai from August 1879 to April 1881, is now part of the “Path to Sanctification”. His statue and a steel cross were placed there to commemorate the deeds of Father Freinademetz during his mission day in Yim Tin Tsai when he was young. Father Freinademetz did not fear the hardships; he learned Hakka and Chinese culture, and began preaching to the villagers. After leaving Yim Tin Tsai, Father Freinademetz went to Shandong Province to preach. In 1908, he died at the age of 56 in Jining, Shandong when being infected after taking care of typhoid fever patients. In 2003, Father Freinademetz was canonised by Pope John Paul II. The villagers expressed their gratitude and love for him by placing the stone statue of Saint Freinademetz at his former residence.
